Google's new Gemini 3.5 Flash, explained — and the one that's not out yet
What launched, what didn't, and what it means if you use Gemini or Google Search.
Google launched Gemini 3.5 Flash on 19 May 2026; a more powerful 'Pro' isn't out yet.
At its big yearly event (Google I/O) on 19 May 2026, Google announced a new AI model: Gemini 3.5 Flash. If you use the Gemini app or see AI answers at the top of Google Search, this affects you — gently. Here's the plain version.
What's new
Google says Gemini 3.5 Flash is faster and noticeably better than before — and even claims it beats its previous bigger model (Gemini 3.1 Pro) at things like coding. That's Google's own claim, so we'd take it as the maker talking until others test it. The main thing you'll feel is snappier, more capable answers in the apps you already use.
The one that isn't out yet
Google also talked about an even more powerful version — Gemini 3.5 Pro — but didn't actually release it. Google's boss, Sundar Pichai, basically said 'give us until next month.' So if you've seen 'Gemini 3.5 Pro' mentioned and can't find it, that's why: it's coming, but it's not here for most people yet.
Does it change anything for you?
Mostly in good, small ways. If you use Gemini or Google's AI search answers, they should feel a bit quicker and smarter — you don't need to switch anything on. If you build apps using Google's AI, note that the price to use Flash has reportedly gone up (about 3× the old Flash), so it's worth checking the cost before you rely on it.
