You might have seen headlines saying Elon Musk's AI company has a powerful new model ready to go. Here's a plain-English guide to what was actually said, what it means in practice, and how to think about it without the hype.

Building an AI model like Grok happens in stages. The first big one is training: the AI learns from enormous amounts of data, which requires huge computing power and takes weeks or months. When training is 'complete', the raw model exists — but it still isn't ready for real people to use. After training, labs run intensive testing, safety checks, and fine-tuning before a public release. For a model as large as V9-Medium is claimed to be — about 1.5 trillion parameters, which is a measure of how big and complex the AI is — that post-training process isn't quick. So 'finished training' on 25 May 2026 does not mean 'available to use on 26 May 2026'.

What to do in the meantime? If you're using Grok or thinking of switching to it, Grok 4.3 is the version to evaluate today — it's real, documented, and available. When V9-Medium actually arrives, it'll be worth checking how it compares on coding tasks (which the reports suggest is its target) and on the standard AI benchmarks. But you don't need to make any decisions based on an announcement. Good tech gets reviewed when it's actually out — and this one isn't yet.
