OpenAI is in early talks to raise at least $30 billion in new funding at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, according to a Bloomberg report cited by TechCrunch. The money would act as a bridge, buying the company more time before it goes public.

## What happened

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that the talks are still at an early stage, with investors driving demand, and that the terms could still change. A valuation of $1.4 trillion refers to OpenAI's worth before the new money is added.

This wouldn't be OpenAI's first mega-round. In March 2026 it raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation, a deal that was meant to be its last private fundraising before a stock market listing this year. Bloomberg had previously reported a possible round closer to $1.2 trillion, so the new figure marks a further jump.

That listing has now been pushed back. OpenAI has said it is delaying its IPO from 2026 to prioritise AI safety concerns, and investors now expect the company to go public in 2027 instead. Both OpenAI and its rival Anthropic have filed confidentially for public listings, with Anthropic potentially debuting this autumn.

The fundraising talks come as OpenAI's revenue is climbing fast. Its annualised revenue run rate, a measure of how much money the company would make in a year if current sales held steady, is now close to $70 billion, up more than 70% since the start of the third quarter, according to Axios. That's up from about $40 billion in August. Growth is coming from subscriptions, enterprise customers, the Codex coding tool, and a new advertising business. Business revenue has more than doubled since July, and the extra consumer revenue added in this quarter alone is bigger than all of OpenAI's consumer revenue for the whole of 2025.

The company's losses are also growing. Its operating loss widened to $12.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up from $9.3 billion in the first. OpenAI does not disclose how much it spends.

Speaking to CNBC at OpenAI's DevDay event the same day, chief financial officer Sarah Friar called the third quarter "incredible" and confirmed 70% growth quarter over quarter. She said people had doubted anyone would pay $200 a month when OpenAI launched that subscription tier, and that consumers are now moving towards paying based on how much they use the product rather than a flat monthly seat.

## What it means for you

The notes don't say how this funding round would affect prices or features for everyday users of ChatGPT or other OpenAI products. What is clear is that OpenAI's business is growing quickly on the back of paying subscribers and business customers, which could shape how it prices future plans, as Friar's comments about "consumption-based pricing" suggest.

At the same DevDay event, OpenAI launched several new products, including "Dots" agents, a model called GPT-6.1 Sol, and a new $500-a-month subscription tier called Pro 500.

## What happens next

OpenAI's fundraising talks are still early and could change. The bigger date to watch is 2027, when investors now expect OpenAI to hold its IPO, having pushed the timeline back from this year.
