The US government has a new website that lets you type in what you need — like a passport or a campsite booking — and get guided to the right federal service using artificial intelligence.

## What happened

On 29 September 2026, the Trump administration launched America.gov, a portal meant to be one starting point for federal services. Its homepage says: "Whatever you need from the government, start here." You type a request into a search bar — renewing a passport, getting a child's passport, replacing a Social Security card, booking a national-park campsite — and the site directs you to the right process.

The site runs on two AI systems: Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok, a chatbot, an AI system that answers written questions. Google said it is a technology partner "leveraging Gemini to help more than 100 million people access critical public resources with greater speed and ease". A White House spokesperson confirmed Grok as the other partner.

US Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia, the Airbnb co-founder now working on government design, said the tool pulls from roughly 29,000 government websites and answers only using official sources. He said it runs on "one official source of truth: The United States Government," according to [FedScoop](https://fedscoop.com/trump-launches-ai-site-america-gov/).

Trump set up the site by executive order, describing it as a "unified digital front door to the Federal Government for every individual in the US seeking Federal information or services." The order instructs agencies to connect their public services to it "as soon as possible," working with the General Services Administration, the National Design Studio and the Office of Management and Budget, using the Login.gov sign-in system.

The launch took place at Washington's Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, with Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CMS Administrator Dr Mehmet Oz in attendance, [CNBC reported](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/29/trump-ai-gemini-grok.html).

## What it means for you

Right now, the site can point you toward services such as passport applications, name changes after marriage, campsite reservations, Medicare plan selection and veterans' benefits — but it mainly offers guidance rather than letting you finish the task on the site itself. From 2027, the administration says you should be able to complete processes and track their progress directly through America.gov.

CNBC noted that Gebbia also sits on Tesla's board, and Tesla owns part of SpaceXAI and uses Grok in its cars — a detail worth knowing given Grok's role in the new government site. The Register described the site as "unfinished, poorly designed," a view that may affect your first impression if you try it now.

## What happens next

Other federal AI projects already exist, including GSA's OneGov and USAi, alongside this new portal. Agencies are expected to link their public-facing services to America.gov over time, though the executive order does not set a fixed deadline beyond "as soon as possible."

## Key takeaways

- America.gov uses AI from Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok to answer questions about government services
- It currently points you to the right service; full task completion is planned from 2027
- The site draws only on about 29,000 official government websites, officials say
