Google's parent company, Alphabet, has just shown how deeply AI has spread through its products, with close to a billion people a month now using its Gemini app and more than a billion using the AI-powered version of Search.

## What happened

Alphabet reported its second-quarter 2026 results on 22 July, and the numbers point to fast growth across its AI-linked businesses. Total revenue rose 24% year on year, with its core Search business up 17% and YouTube advertising up 13%. Google Cloud, which rents out computing power and AI tools to businesses, grew even faster, up 82%, and now has a backlog of $514 billion in future contracted work.

To keep up with demand, Alphabet spent $44.9 billion on capital expenditure (things like data centres and chips) in the quarter alone. According to Bloomberg, [its future spending commitments have climbed to $811 billion](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-07-23/alphabet-s-future-spending-commitments-soar-to-811-billion).

Usage figures were large across the board. The Gemini app has 950 million monthly active users, and Search's AI Mode, a feature that gives AI-generated answers, has passed 1 billion monthly users. Google said its model APIs, the tools developers use to plug Gemini into their own software, now process about 22 billion tokens (units of text) per minute, up from 16 billion, and more than 9 million developers use its models monthly. Nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise, its business version of the chatbot.

Other Google AI tools also grew: its open Gemma models have been downloaded more than 900 million times, its Antigravity coding tool has 2.4 million weekly users, and YouTube's "Ask YouTube" feature was used by 140 million people in June. Alphabet's self-driving unit, Waymo, has completed over 1 million home deliveries. [Google's own recap of the results](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/alphabet-earnings-q2-2026/) quotes chief executive Sundar Pichai saying: "Our AI investments are redefining what's possible across every part of our business."

## What it means for you

If you use Google Search, Gemini or YouTube, you're part of a user base now numbering in the hundreds of millions to over a billion for some features. That scale suggests these AI tools are becoming standard parts of how people search and get answers online, rather than niche extras. The heavy spending on data centres and chips is what lets Google run these tools for so many people at once.

## What happens next

Google said it is now pre-training Gemini 4, the next version of its AI model, though the notes give no timeline for when it might launch.

## Key takeaways

- Gemini app now has 950 million monthly users, Search AI Mode over 1 billion
- Google Cloud revenue jumped 82%, with a $514 billion order backlog
- Google is already pre-training its next model, Gemini 4
