Jeff Dean, one of the most senior engineers in Google's history, has left the company to start a new venture called Discovery Loop. It aims to get AI to do something big: run scientific research largely on its own.

## What happened

Dean was Google's 30th employee and chief scientist at DeepMind, Google's AI research arm. His last day was 6 August 2026, after 27 years at the company. He helped build core pieces of Google's computing infrastructure, including systems called MapReduce and Bigtable, which let Google process huge amounts of data.

He has co-founded Discovery Loop with three other long-time Google researchers: Sanjay Ghemawat, who worked with Dean on that infrastructure; Oriol Vinyals, who co-led Google's Gemini AI models alongside Dean; and Quoc Le, who helped invent a technique called sequence-to-sequence learning, used in language translation and other AI systems.

Discovery Loop is set up as a public benefit corporation, a type of company that must also pursue a public good alongside profit. Its goal is to automate the research cycle, meaning the repeated steps of forming a hypothesis, running an experiment, and analysing the results, across machine learning, science and engineering. The company wants to build AI systems that can improve themselves with little human input, according to [Wired](https://wired.com/story/jeff-dean-google-discovery-loop-startup).

The start-up has backing from Khosla Ventures, Radical Ventures and Alphabet, Google's parent company. Google is acting as a founding investor and cloud partner, and the two sides plan a joint research framework on the infrastructure that underpins machine learning systems.

The announcement landed on the same day Google revealed a shake-up at DeepMind: Demis Hassabis stepped back from running the unit, and Koray Kavukcuoglu took over leadership of Gemini, according to [The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/google-deepmind-shakeup-hassabis-jeff-dean-vinyals-discovery-loop). Vinyals, Dean's Gemini co-lead, left for Discovery Loop the same day.

Dean is also reportedly the source of an idea inside Google called "Frozen", which involves building Gemini's AI architecture directly into computer chips.

## What it means for you

The notes don't describe a product you can use yet. Discovery Loop is building AI meant to speed up scientific and engineering research itself, not a consumer app. If it works, the effects would show up indirectly, through faster progress in fields that rely on this kind of research.

Because Google remains a founding investor and cloud partner, the tools Discovery Loop builds may still run on Google's infrastructure, and any advances could eventually feed back into Google's own AI work.

## What happens next

The notes don't say when Discovery Loop will release any products or research results. Other companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are also working on AI systems meant to accelerate scientific research, so Discovery Loop enters a field with competition already under way.

## Key takeaways

- Jeff Dean, a Google veteran of 27 years, left on 6 August 2026 to start Discovery Loop.
- The start-up wants AI to run the whole research cycle: hypothesis, experiment, analysis.
- Google is a founding investor, so its cloud and chips may still power the work.
