Tesla and SpaceX have confirmed they are building a giant new factory to make their own computer chips, rather than relying on outside suppliers. The project, called Terafab, will sit on a huge site in Texas and is meant to supply everything from Tesla cars to humanoid robots to satellites.

## What happened

On 6 August 2026, the two companies, both run by Elon Musk, made official a plan first floated in March: a semiconductor campus in Grimes County, Texas, about an hour north-west of Houston. Semiconductors are the chips that power almost every modern device, from phones to cars.

The first building phase will cost $16.8 billion, according to [the Austin American-Statesman](https://www.statesman.com/business/article/elon-musk-terafab-spacex-grimes-county-22375537.php). That's far less than the roughly $55 billion first phase discussed in county filings back in May, though the full project could eventually reach $119 billion across multiple phases.

The plans describe more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space and at least 3,000 jobs, on a site more than twice the size of Tesla's existing Austin factory. Musk has called it the largest and most valuable building on Earth.

Terafab will handle every stage of chipmaking in-house: designing the logic, the memory, packaging the finished chips and testing them. It's set to produce two custom chip families, both built using a 2-nanometre process, a measure of how small and efficient the transistors on a chip are. One family will power Tesla cars and its Optimus robots; the other will go into SpaceX's orbital data-centre satellites.

The plant will draw water from the Gibbons Creek Reservoir, previously used to cool a coal power plant that shut in 2018.

Texas is backing the project with a $30 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund, a state incentive programme, plus a 10-year tax break covering all local property taxes. In return, SpaceX will pay the county $20 million a year for 35 years, and must invest at least $5 billion by 2030 and create 1,800 full-time jobs by 2035.

Musk described the project's ambition plainly: "We're now embarking on the most epic chip-building effort," he said, according to [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/06/tesla-and-spacex-will-invest-16-8b-to-start-building-terafab-chip-factory-in-texas/).

## What it means for you

If you own or plan to buy a Tesla, or are watching the Optimus robot programme, this plant is meant to give those products custom-designed chips rather than ones bought from other chipmakers. For anyone interested in SpaceX's satellite ambitions, the same site is meant to supply chips for space-based data centres, computing infrastructure that runs in orbit rather than on the ground.

There's no confirmation yet of when any of this will reach products you can buy, and no construction start date has been set.

## What happens next

SpaceX itself has described the plan as a framework rather than a binding commitment, and the notes indicate no construction start date has been finalised. It's also not yet settled how the intellectual property, the designs and technology behind the chips, will be split between Tesla and SpaceX.

## Key takeaways

- Tesla and SpaceX confirmed Terafab, a Texas chip campus, on 6 August 2026.
- It will make custom 2-nanometre chips for cars, Optimus robots and space data centres.
- Elon Musk called it "the most epic chip-building effort", though plans aren't fully locked in.
