A Chinese company that makes humanoid robots - the human-shaped machines you may have seen doing backflips online - just had one of the most dramatic stock market debuts of the year.

## What happened

Unitree Robotics, officially called Hangzhou Yushu Technology, listed on Shanghai's STAR Market on 19 August 2026. It's the first general-purpose humanoid robot maker to go public on mainland China's stock exchange.

The shares opened at 1,100 yuan, 629% above the 150.80 yuan price set in the initial public offering (IPO), the process by which a private company first sells shares to the public. That briefly valued the company at about 445 billion yuan, or roughly $66 billion, according to the [South China Morning Post](https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-trends/article/3364499/unitree-robotics-surges-629-us66-billion-valuation-shanghai-share-debut). Caixin reported it was the biggest first-day jump of any new listing this year.

By the close of trading the shares had settled at 845 yuan, still up 460% on the day, valuing Unitree at about 342 billion yuan, [CNBC reported](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/19/china-backflipping-robot-maker-unitree-jumps-shanghai-ipo.html). About 23.2 billion yuan of shares changed hands.

The company raised about 6.1 billion yuan by selling 40.45 million shares, 10% of the company, far above its 4.2 billion yuan target. Demand was intense: 9.8 million retail investor accounts competed for just 9.7 million shares on offer.

Founder Wang Xingxing, 36, owns about 121.4 million shares, worth roughly 103 billion yuan at the close. Meituan, an early investor holding 8.7%, saw its stake rise to nearly 30 billion yuan, about 70 times what it originally put in. Tencent is also an investor, and DeepSeek contributed about 140.8 million yuan.

The surge happened even as the broader market fell that day, with the STAR Composite index down 7.2% and the Shanghai Composite down 2.4%.

## What it means for you

Unitree shipped 5,900 humanoid robots in the first half of 2026, giving it 31% of the global market, second only to rival Agibot. Chinese companies made more than 97% of all humanoid robot shipments worldwide in that period.

If you follow robotics or own investments with exposure to Chinese tech, this debut signals strong investor appetite for humanoid robot makers specifically, even during a broader market downturn. It doesn't tell you anything yet about when or whether Unitree's robots will be available to ordinary consumers or businesses outside China.

## What happens next

The notes don't say what Unitree plans next, such as new products or international expansion. What's confirmed is that the company is now publicly traded on the STAR Market, giving outside investors a way to buy into China's humanoid robotics sector for the first time.
