Nvidia's chips power most of the world's AI systems, and the cost of running them is about to go up. Bloomberg reported that some of Nvidia's largest customers have been warned that servers built around its chips will cost more than 15% more from early 2027, in many configurations.

## What happened

Bloomberg said, citing people familiar with the matter, that companies building servers for Microsoft, Google, Oracle and other large data-centre operators have told their customers about the price rises. The increases apply to systems shipping in early 2027, including Nvidia's flagship Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell platforms. How much more you'd pay depends on the chip generation and how much memory is packed into each system. Nvidia has not confirmed the report, and Reuters said it could not independently verify it.

The driver is memory, the chips that store data for a computer to use while it works. Server memory (DRAM) prices roughly doubled in the first quarter of 2026, and analysis firm Counterpoint reported rises of 80-90% quarter-on-quarter across DRAM, NAND and a specialised type called HBM. Memory now makes up about a quarter of the cost of a high-end server rack. Deloitte expects AI-server DRAM prices to quadruple over the course of 2026.

The numbers involved are large to begin with. A Blackwell NVL72 GB200 rack, one of Nvidia's current top-end systems, costs $2.8-3.4 million. Inquiries for the newer Vera Rubin system are running at $5-7 million per unit. The report landed days before Nvidia's earnings announcement on 26 August.

Memory makers Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, which produce most of the world's memory chips, stand to benefit from the price rises, according to [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-22/nvidia-customers-notified-about-ai-related-price-hikes-above-15).

## What it means for you

You won't see this bill directly, but it feeds into one you might. AI companies buy these servers to run the chatbots, image generators and other tools you use. When the hardware behind those tools gets more expensive, that cost tends to work its way into subscription prices or into how much free access companies are willing to offer, as [24/7 Wall St.](https://247wallst.com/investing/2026/08/23/nvidias-15-price-hike-reveals-the-hidden-cost-of-the-ai-boom/) noted in describing this as a hidden cost of the AI boom. The notes don't say any specific AI product's price is changing yet, so there's nothing to act on today.

## What happens next

Nvidia reported earnings on 26 August 2026, shortly after this story broke, though the notes don't detail what the company said about pricing. Whether the increases show up in what you pay for AI subscriptions will depend on decisions individual AI companies make, which haven't been reported yet.

## Key takeaways

- Nvidia told top customers 2027 AI server prices will rise more than 15%
- Memory chip costs have doubled or more, driving the increase
- It could raise what you pay for AI tools down the line
