Sweden's government blocks ChatGPT and Claude: what it means

Staff at the Government Offices lose access to two popular AI chatbots on work computers from Monday, while Microsoft Copilot stays approved.

The answer

Sweden's Government Offices will block ChatGPT and Claude on staff work computers from 26 October for information security.

Staff at Sweden's Government Offices (Regeringskansliet) will no longer be able to use ChatGPT or Claude on their work computers from Monday 26 October. The stated reason is information security.

What happened

Sveriges Radio's Ekot reported on 23 October, citing internal information, that the office will cut access to the two chatbots. SVT also reported the block the same day.

The measure covers the prime minister's office and the ministries.

Microsoft Copilot remains allowed. The Government Offices ran a security review of Copilot and took further protective measures. The press office would not say what those measures were, citing security.

Digitalisation director Mikael Wettercrantz reportedly warned on the office intranet that using AI services without a contract could have consequences for information security. That is a paraphrase of the reporting, not a verified quote.

The office had already restricted DeepSeek, another AI chatbot. The Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care have also introduced blocks.

What it means for you

For most people, nothing changes directly. This applies to government staff on work computers, not to the public. The notes from the reports do not say that ChatGPT or Claude are restricted for anyone else.

The block also does not end all generative AI use in the Government Offices. Some staff reportedly get access through an internal AI platform.

One outlet says Claude may return via Copilot. Other sources do not confirm this, so treat it as unverified.

If you use AI tools at work, the reported warning is a useful reminder: using a service without a contract can raise information security concerns.

What happens next

The block starts on Monday 26 October. The reports do not say how long it will last or whether other tools will be added to the list. The Government Offices has not said what protective measures it applied to Copilot.
