Prices from the maker or retailer named on each pick below, checked 25 October 2026. A dash means the price changes too often to quote: tap through for today's.

A commuter e-bike earns its keep on wet Tuesday mornings, not sunny Sundays. Check three things: that the battery covers your round trip with room to spare, that the motor has the torque for your hills, and that mudguards, lights and a rack come fitted, so there is nothing extra to buy.

  • Carrera Vengeance-E 3.0: A mountain bike with a 120 mm travel suspension fork, aimed at trails more than commuting.
  • Carrera Subway-E 2 and Raleigh Motus: Both are in our best electric bike guide; this guide picks different commuters so you get more choice.

How we chose

Our buying criteria

We judged these bikes on the commute itself: fitted kit, range for a daily round trip, motor torque for hills, brakes and carrying weight, from the makers' and UK retailers' product pages on the update date. We have not ridden them on our own test routes, and each pick names its catch.

  • Round-trip range: compare the claimed range with your daily distance, because claims assume ideal conditions.
  • Motor torque: compare the Nm figures, such as 75 Nm on the Trek Verve+ 3's Bosch Performance Line against 50 Nm on the Trek District+ 2 and 32 Nm on the Dawes, if your commute has hills.
  • Fitted kit: check for mudguards, lights, a rack and a kickstand.
  • Brakes: check the brake type, as the Dawes Scenic Low Step has cable discs rather than hydraulic.

How we choose every pick

Your questions, answered

Do I need a licence, tax or insurance to commute on an electric bike?
Good news: a bike that counts as an EAPC (electrically assisted pedal cycle) needs no licence, registration, tax or insurance. That applies when the motor is 250 W or less, stops helping at 15.5 mph and the rider is 14 or over.
How fast can I go on an e-bike commute?
Your e-bike's motor must not push the bike past 15.5 mph. Its continuous power must also stay at 250 W or less. Check this on any pick you choose, so your commute stays legal and smooth.
Can I ride an e-bike to school or work at 14?
Yes. You can ride an electric bike from age 14, as long as it is an EAPC. That is a pedal-assist bike, where the motor only helps while you pedal. Check the model you choose is an EAPC before you buy it.
What range do I need for a daily commute?
Range depends on your weight, luggage, assist mode, temperature and wind, so check the realistic distance, not just the maximum. As a rule of thumb, pick a battery whose claimed range is well over double your one-way trip, so cold days and hills don't leave you short. Claimed ranges vary, for example the Dawes Scenic Low Step's 375 Wh battery gives up to 40 miles, and the Elops Long Distance 500's 504 Wh battery claims up to 110 km in mode 1.
Which e-bikes come with mudguards, lights and a rack?
The Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 4.0 EQ, Trek Verve+ 3 Gen 3, Trek District+ 2 Lowstep and Cube Editor Hybrid Pro 400X FE all come with mudguards, lights and a rack or carrier. If you want to fold it away, the Tern Vektron Q9 folding e-bike also has a rack and lights.
