How we chose

Our buying criteria

A student laptop has to do three jobs well: last a full day, weigh very little and keep up with essays, browsing and group projects. So we looked for a light build, a long battery and enough memory, and each pick lists at least 8GB of memory, with the MacBook Neo at 1.23 kg and the Zenbook A14 just under a kilo. Screen brightness is measured in nits, the unit for how bright a screen can get. Each laptop's figures come from its maker's UK page and its live UK listing, and each pick shows its catch.

  • Battery: compare the video streaming hours each maker quotes. Apple says up to 16 hours for the MacBook Neo and 18 hours for the MacBook Air 13; ASUS says up to 32 hours.
  • Memory: the MacBook Neo has 8GB, while the MacBook Air, Dell 14, Surface Laptop and Zenbook A14 all have 16GB.
  • Operating system: macOS or Windows. The Zenbook A14 and Surface Laptop run Windows on Arm chips, so check your course software runs on Arm first.
  • Ports: the MacBook Neo has one USB 3 and one USB 2 USB-C port; the Air has two Thunderbolt 4 ports.
